The dish was presented by the nobility of St. Petersburg on the occasion of Nicholas II's Coronation on 14 May 1896. In making the dish, Mikhail Perchin drew on late Renaissance examples of jewellery made of rock-crystal. There is a similar dish in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
