In late August 1911 Emperor Nicholas II arrived in Kiev. On 30 August he attended the dedication of a monument to his grandfather Emperor Alexander II. On the same day, Nicholas II visited the Kievo-Pechersakya Monastery where the monks presented him with these Gospels. These Gospels were then kept at the Alexander Palace.
