The Wedding of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodrovna, 1895
by Laurits Regner Tuxen
Signed and dated bottom left: L. Tuxen 1895
Oil on canvas, 65.5 x 87.5 cm
The marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra took place shortly after the death of Alexander III, on November 14, 1894, Empress Marie Feodorovna's birthday; the state of official mourning was lifted for that one day. This painting is a preparatory work for a larger picture now hanging at Buckingham Palace in London. According to contemporary accounts rather fewer guests attending the wedding ceremony than are portrayed in Tuxen's picture.
